Please Join With Us

I became aware of Sephora selling a lipstick by Kat Von D which has designated a colour as "celebutard" when talking with a self advocate who was really upset about the use of the 'r word' in that way. She said, "You need to do something about it." We sat down together and talked. I said that she and I both had responsibilities in responding. I do not advocate for her, I advocate with her. We outlined some strategies. I told her about petitions that could be set up on line - she doesn't have a computer so she asked if I could do that part. I said I could. She decided to write a letter, copy it, and take it into both Sephora stores that she knows. She also decided to send her letter to friends and get them to take it in too ... So we both have our tasks. She left determined and realising that I didn't need to do anything for her - even more that it was great to do this with each other.

I've never done an on line petition before ... but here it is ... Sephora Petition ... please join us in expressing concern and outrage.

Really?

They didn't expect this?

Please.

Why do you assume that the word that celebrity is being combined with is retard it could equally be bastard or leotard. I'm sure there are others.

Even assume that it is retard it is perhaps meant in the sense of retarding the aging process or other similar claim.

Ignore my previous comment, I have since discovered that this is not the first use of the word celebutard, although it is certainly the first I have seen

Signed.

And, if you are still looking for an email address at Sephora, it appears that their email convention is firstname.lastname@sephora.com, and their CEO's name is David Suliteanu.

Signed. I have to wonder what other slurs they might have thought were cute? Sheesh. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

And I must say I'm in awe about the interaction between you and the woman who brought this issue forward. Glad she got you to learn how to do petitions on-line.

Thanks Heidi for figuring out the email address, now he'll receive notification at every signature.

Oops. Your fingers typed "it's" instead of "its" in the petition.

Consider the source. Kat Von D?? She is not known for her good behaviour and humanitarian endeavors.

Thank you for this Dave. I found out about the lipstick last night.

I've since shared your petition on both Down Wit Dat and Down Syndrome Uprising and tweeted about it to a few global DS advocates. Hopefully all together, we can make this happen.
Cheers!

Signed! Thank you Dave, for starting this petition.

Sephora has contacted Down Syndrome Uprisng via Twitter with the following response

"Thank you for calling this matter to our attention. We are deeply sorry that the name of this lipstick has caused offense, and we will be ceasing the sale of this shade both in our stores and online."

We shall see. In any event, it is a victory.

Looks like the petition is closed. It also looks like it was very, very effective. Kudos to you and the self advocate.
