You stare at me
And think you know
Exactly who I am.
You see my weight
The push of my belly against my belt
And the math, of who I am, comes easily to you.
You stare at me
And think you know
Exactly who I am.
You see the wheels that I push
To get round the barriers in my way
And the geography, of my soul, maps out in you mind.
You stare at me
And think you know
Exactly who I am.
You see my gender
And you compare me to other others
And the architecture, of my heart, blueprints perception.
You stare at me
And think you know
Exactly who I am.
You see the colour of my skin
And in your mind you see this as information
Allowing you to code, your approval, of my existence.
You stare at me
And think you know
Exactly who I am.
But I see you
Stare at me
And I know all I need to know ...
of you.

Well said.
ReplyDeleteExcellent.
ReplyDeleteBravo, Dave!
ReplyDeleteI saw a quote this morning and thought of it when I read your post: "God bless you for being so completely what you obviously are!" Barbara Brown Taylor, on blessing those who persecute you.
ReplyDeleteI love your poetry.
