They are handles, not permission.
Say it again, they are handles, not permission.
It's an extra chromosome, not permission to hook and pull.
It's disability, not permission to discriminate, disparage and disenfranchise.
They are what they are, but what they aren't is permission.

Right on. :)
great!! ....may I use today in some training???
Great, simple and to the point. However, I think you meant "an extra chromosome" and not "an extra gene" here...
Louna, Thanks, change made.
John R, of course, go ahead.
What does hook and pull mean?
Wow that's good Dave. Am sharing on facebook.
oh and another correction "It's a disability" in the first use not "It disability. It's so good and should be made into big posters.
oh and I don't have handles on my power wheelchair for that very reason!! :)
FB'ing this now. Quiet. Powerful. Truth.
It's the simple things that people forget, so this was a great reminder!
I share Amanda's confusion about the intended meaning of "hook and pull" in this context.
I am sure many other wheelchair riders must have chairs without handles for the same reason as Glee! I know this is true for at least one of my wheelchair riding friends and I imagine more. She does sometimes need help being pushed, in which case I or others push either the back of the chair or her shoulders (but only if she says she wants it!) and that seems to work fine. I gather that, for some reason, it can be a challenge to find a wheelchair without handles. I would think these would be in enough demand to enable a better supply.
i took "hook and pull" as "link arms at the elbows and pull the person away from what s/he is doing to where you want him/her to go." taking away the power of self-determination.
please someone jump in if i missed the boat...
Hi all, I wondered if the 'hook and pull' would be confusing. It meant something to me but may not have meant the same to others. I viewed the handles as an easy grab ... I saw the extra chromosome as representative of where someone could hook a leash and pull ... yank someone away from their own destiny, their own desires and their own dreams. That's what was happening in my mind at the time I wrote it.
I got it.
I loved it.
THANK YOU! I've been out in my chair and people have moved me out of the way, drives me nuts. I wouldn't pick you up andmove you!
