Canada.Com is now up. Please drop by and comment there - even if you've done so here. I'd appreciate the support. My post tomorrow will be delayed by several hours. I got home from a long trip and am too tired to write something tonight.
What an insightful, beautifully written article.
ReplyDeleteYou make your points not from a soap box, but amongst the crowd; Posing the issue clearly, using valid statistical information and applying the issue as not just benefiting people with disabilities (which SHOULD be enough, however, you recognize the reality of politics clearly here) but ALL equally. “If there is to be justice, all must benefit. If there is to be respect for law, then it must be applied equally” And then you offered solutions that are certainly doable and without much cost - and that is the only way to get the attention of the politicians - show them a way to make VOTERS happy with very little cost...
Passionate and heartfelt. Lovely article Dave.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful piece, Dave, and timely. I work for an organization that supports adults affected by developmental disabilities and we have become very visible in our community in a variety of ways. One of these ways involves bringing to light various issues that affect people with and without disabilities, such as poverty, medical issues, world peace issues, etc. In researching the UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which is a global action plan to achieve eight anti-poverty goals by 2015 I discovered many facts about the living conditions of many people world-wide. I then began looking into international disability issues and came across the International Disability Alliance site. One of the things that jumped out at me was a position paper written about the UN's MDGs and how they virtually ignore persons with disabilities. The title of the paper is “Overcoming invisibility: Making the MDGs inclusive of and accessible for persons with disabilities”. The "Overcoming invisibility" portion of the title has bothered me since reading it. I have realized that the people that we support, advocate for and usually genuinely care about ARE often invisible. I think your article really highlights a terrible injustice that is occurring to many invisible people. Thank you for continuing the good fight and may many more of us follow your lead. It is time for community members affected by disability to be allowed to step into the light and be seen.
