Hey Sit Still

It's one in the morning and I'm up. In fact, I'm just in. We drove straight back from Boston after getting off work yesterday. We are both suffering from highway hypnosis and I'm having trouble even typing these words. The trip was uneventful, we ate in the car and stopped only fill the car's tank and to drain our own. There was the stop at duty free because we wanted to pick up some cheap beer and they had a Tim Horton's that was still open.

Home. Safe.

No blog until tomorrow. My post did make it on to www.foxnews.com - click the opinion button and maybe leave a comment. Lots of people disagreed with my point of view, add your voice to the discussion.

Soo... til tomorrow.

  1. I noticed that lots of people disagreed with your opinion and at first was disheartened. However, I gave it a few more moments worth of thought and realized that you made people think about a topic that often goes without notice. You made people challenge the view and think even more about it. Certainly, they disagreed, but you opened up the dialogue for an entire nation! Pretty impressive, sir, pretty impressive.

  2. Anonymous, I so agree with you! Thanks for bringing that forward. I know that often I'm 'preaching to the choir' and I thought this opportunity would give me the opportuntity to address people who might not otherwise think about, or talk seriously about, issues connected to disability. I knew that there would be lots of nasty comments but I knew that there would be others that were positive and others that were thoughtfully disagreeing. We can't fear debate! I'm pleased that it's out there and being read. I'm pleased that a few people may think twice about the feelings of others. That's all cool with me.

  3. Dave, I'm so glad you're able to take the wide-angle view of the situation. When I read some of the comments about your piece, I have to admit that I began to feel quite defeated--although I also had to giggle about how many American commenters thought a Canadian was trying to take away their first amendment rights! (Logic much?) But then, like Anonymous, I thought about how great it is that your piece is out there, and how brave of you to let it appear on Fox, which isn't exactly known for attracting the most nuanced viewers. Well done!

  4. Dave, I've just started reading you recently and have enjoyed every post. I have severely disliked the insulting use of that word for MANY years, since I was eight or nine, I think. My parents were friends with another couple whose oldest son was born with his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. I got into several fights with other kids in my neighborhood over just that insult, and this was in the '70's!

    Glad you're home safe!

  5. Just read all the posts at foxnews and I have to admit that some of them scare me deeply. I'm glad you think with such a wide view. I keep telling myself that some of the commenters may fall into the "thou dost protest too much" category and that perhaps secretly they are listening. Obviously your message caused some anxiety and hopefully that will nudge out a little bit of introspection. Thanks for your work! Jakma

  6. The negative, even hateful, responses are very typical of Fox News.
I am sure that many of the people who read it, who didn't take it as another opportunity to be hateful, got it.
