Not the core kind, that seems to instigate and drive things, but definitely a participant, and it's not even just that I was afraid they wouldn't be my friend anymore and turn on me, I figured that other kid was so odd that it was fine to be mean to them despite a vague twinge far away that was guilt and regret. I've been a bystander doing nothing too. And later on I was the kid that was so different that it was ok to be cruel to me. Of course, I was always that person, but due to a certain convergence of circumstances, in my first school the other kids thought I was cool. I was no different from later when I was disgusting or stupid or slow in other kids' minds.Norahhttp://blogwithoutatopic1.web-log.nlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35743239.post-75049813139769130852010-09-09T07:15:40.747-04:002010-09-09T07:15:40.747-04:00I think Ruby is going to be a kind, yet fierce and...I think Ruby is going to be a kind, yet fierce and courageous if she witnesses bullying!

Years before our son with Down syndrome was born, I remember my oldest coming home and telling me how child a (the principal's son) was ridiculing child b because he had shown the other kids the scars on his chest from multiple heart surgeries and my oldest had stood up for him and the bully had backed down. The sad thing was that years later, when child b had the opportunity to defend my son from verbal ridicule - he didn't.

Here's to kind kids who know when and how to be fierce and courageous.Tamarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04624151975591059655noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35743239.post-26778835872416829282010-09-08T16:16:19.595-04:002010-09-08T16:16:19.595-04:00Belinda, I just loved your comment. Funny that your stories of her have me wishing great things for a child I don't know. Reminds me to wish great things for all of those little people as they start out. I've talked to my little ones about bullying but I've never talked to them about kindness. Such an oversight is unexcusable. I read this blog for many reasons, I am often informed here, but today, I am changed. I figure it's better for my kid to be the victim than to be the bully...as sad as that is...at least they'll have some ability to empathize later in life.

Plus, you know - being the bully's target...it's a family tradition.
