The Fall

I was being assisted into the office when I fell.

I don't fall often.

I know the danger is always there, my balance being what it is.

But I fell.

Mid-fall, I felt two strong hands catch me. I felt the fall slow down. As quickly as I could I began to move my feet under me. Those hands held me in place, held my weight, held my fear, while I grabbed towards the wheelchair.

My feet.

My hands.

Found purchase.

I slammed into the side of my chair.

But I didn't hit the floor.

The driver, who'd accompanied me through the door, picked up one of my shoes that had fallen off and, though offered assistance for it to be put back on, I had him put it in the bag.

He wished me a happy new year that he just guaranteed that I'll have.

I thanked him.

It took twenty minutes for the shaking to stop.

Twenty minutes for the fear to diminish.

I fell.

But I didn't hit the ground.

May it ever be always for everyone.

Be that there will always be safe arms to catch us when we tumble. Glad to know that some found you, friend.

Ah Dave! So happy to hear you are okay. <3

This is my New Year's wish for you and Joe...

May you always have walls for the winds,
a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire,
laughter to cheer you, those you love near you,
and all your heart might desire.

Wishing you a bright and fall free 2014
xx Heidi from P.E.I.

I'm glad you had someone to help you, and that it wasn't worse. I'm not surprised you were shaken.

Last October, I had a bad fall, getting out of the bathtub, and spent two and a half weeks in bed. The swelling and pain has mostly gone, but it left me frightened to do things I used to do on my own, unless I have someone with me.

Thank goodness the driver saved you mid-fall. Still, the emotional toll even a near-fall can take on you is huge.

You were lucky to have a driver who felt it his job to deliver you safely.

Is this the same driver you had when you couldn't find your key?

In either case, that sounds like just the right kind of person to deliver people who need occasional help: kind, quick, committed. You are blessed in your helpers.

Happy New Year - and a next year that is in all ways better.

Just so glad you are OK. That could have been so much worse. Not sure why i say that but its meant to make people feel better somehow? But it was scary and awful and I expect you will ache all per from the resistance and hitting your chair. Rest up and make sure you have some paidkillers and hot and cold treatments in case you do bruise badly or have muscle pain. Poor you.x

About a month ago I fell, and unfortunately DID hit the ground... and tore a tendon. The fear I learned from that now accompanies me everytime I walk at night. It is SO scarey how even one fall can do so much damage. Glad someone broke your fall.
